What the official statement establishes
The research question for October 29, 2026 is what analysts can responsibly say about the prior day's Federal Reserve decision without claiming an unverified XAU/USD response. The official statement dated October 28 reports that the Federal Open Market Committee maintained its federal funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00%, in a ten-to-two decision. Two members preferred a quarter-point increase [1]. The statement characterizes economic activity as expanding strongly, acknowledges elevated uncertainty and says inflation remains elevated. These are the Committee's published assessments, not a measurement of gold-market performance.
The release occurred at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 28, according to the Federal Reserve [1]. The institutional calendar identifies the two-day meeting and press conference on October 27–28 [2]. Those timestamps provide a factual backbone for an event study. They do not reveal the expectations embedded in Treasury yields or foreign exchange prices immediately before the release. A decision to hold rates steady may be a surprise in some environments and unsurprising in others. The conceptual distinction explored in an FOMC decision versus a surprise therefore becomes central to honest post-meeting analysis.
The transmission channels a gold researcher should examine
Monetary-policy information may affect gold through changes in expected policy rates, real Treasury yields, the dollar and risk perceptions. These channels can counteract one another. If expectations of future tightening change, the effect on inflation compensation may not match the effect on nominal yields. The FRED DFII10 series documents one market-derived measure of a ten-year inflation-indexed Treasury yield, with specific units and source methodology [3]. A researcher can place it in a carefully constructed timeline, while remembering that a daily yield series cannot by itself describe minute-level trading immediately following a statement. Another source of ambiguity is the press conference and follow-on commentary. Market participants digest successive pieces of information: the release, questions and answers, and later economic evidence. A chart showing a large move after the meeting does not identify which message, order-flow change or liquidity condition caused the movement. Analysis must distinguish actual traded or quoted prices from theoretical chart levels. Our discussions of real Treasury yields and gold and chart prices and execution costs establish why economically coherent narratives still require independent price, timing and execution evidence.
A transparent post-meeting research protocol
Begin with the exact official text and release time. Archive a pre-decision expectation measure from a source that existed before the meeting, then document any statement change relative to the preceding meeting without attributing motives. Gather independently timestamped gold quotations, dollar measures, relevant nominal Treasury yields and market-derived inflation-indexed yields. Decide in advance whether the study examines the first fifteen minutes, the press-conference period or the next full trading day. Treat each window as a different research question. Without valid quotes, report the framework and acknowledge that the resulting movement has not been measured.
The October 28 statement is a verifiable event, but its existence alone is not a validated trading signal. A useful explanation reports uncertainty, considers alternative causal channels and avoids inventing gold price levels. Even if a future dataset shows a strong price movement, the interpretation must be subjected to alternative explanations and independent periods. NSI.GOLD's role is to separate policy facts from retrospective storytelling. The proposed NSI decision-science framework concerns human behavior around uncertainty; it neither diagnoses participants nor provides independently validated predictions for XAU/USD. The honest conclusion today is a precise statement of what the Fed announced and a clear list of the additional market evidence required before a directional claim could be defended.
For reproducibility, an analyst testing the official FOMC release and independently timestamped rate and gold observations must preserve original timestamps, source definitions, rejected observations and a dated record of every inclusion rule. The main interpretive hazard is inventing a gold reaction or describing an expected decision as a surprise. A useful report should distinguish the economic mechanism being proposed from the evidence actually available, compare the hypothesis with a simple baseline, identify alternative explanations and publish uncertainty rather than an arbitrary confidence score. If multiple windows, thresholds or classifications are inspected, the number of attempted comparisons matters. A pattern discovered while choosing those settings is exploratory and needs a separate validation sample. The purpose of this protocol is not to manufacture a profitable XAU/USD forecast but to make the analysis reviewable by another researcher with the same underlying data.
